2016: Last Crumbs

As we bid adieu to 2016 (don’t let the door hit you on the way out, stupid year), I’m doing a bit of housekeeping here in the Ovenbird kitchen. No crazy resolutions to proclaim, just a promise to myself to be kind, eat well and wisely, and amble more. So tonight I’m sharing a few random edibles I threw together since my last post, just to clear the decks–out with the old, in with the new, and all that. First, there were muffins (there are always muffins)–sweet, cakey, melt-in-your-mouth, mixed berry muffins from Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Vegan Brunch: And maple-sweetened, no oil banana chocolate chip muffins from Dreena Burton’s Plant-Powered Families: There were oven fries (sliced russets tossed with olive oil, salt and pepper) and gravy with mixed greens, leftover from Thanksgiving, an almost poutine: There was first-day-of-winter-break braided pizza, made with Immaculate Baking Company’s crescent roll dough and Follow Your Heart mozzarella shreds: There was a lot of soup: And, in this last week of December, a lot of sweets. #TBT–Breakfast for Dinner

For VeganMoFo Day 3, here’s a post I wrote two years ago but never published. As the French say, plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. October has been a bit of a blur, and a lot of my meals have been on the fly. Last week I made a pot of vegan chili and ate chili for five nights straight–chili over polenta, improvised tamale pie with chili, polenta, and Daiya Cheddar Style Shreds, and chili in a bowl straight-up, with toast for dipping. This week, my spouse is away and given that my child pretty much eschews everything I cook, I’m cooking for myself. I had to quell an initial impulse to eat nothing but Earth Balance Vegan Aged Cheddar Flavor Puffs for dinner. Despite being fired up after attending the inaugural Triangle VegFest and sampling many a tasty vegan item, I haven’t had the time or motivation to do much cooking this week. Fortunately, this recipe for Grits Casserole posted by Triangle Chance for All, a microsanctuary in the heart of North Carolina, …

VeganMoFo Day One–A Fresh Start

Welcome to Day One of VeganMoFo 2016 at Ovenbird. This is my first year as a participant, and I am delighted to have a new impetus for blogging about vegan eats. What started two years ago as a companion blog to the more literarily-inclined Thoughts Like Birds is back after a long dormancy, and with less lofty aspirations. Ovenbird was originally intended to be a blog about eating and reading. Truly, these days I’m doing well to feed myself, let alone read something and then write about it. While reading and writing have (once again) taken a backseat to gainful employment and child rearing, a new passion/release has entered my life: running. I started last March with the Couch to 5K app and have continued to work on building my base, entering several 5K races this fall. I’m not fast, but I’m determined. I’m also 50 years old, so I don’t expect to ever be at the front of the pack. I do plan to keep running, though, as long as my body will abide, …
